Our Vision
To simultaneously eradicate illiteracy and democratize literacy. Hope Reads is an app that gives everyone the opportunity to increase their reading skills.
What is Hope Reads?
An app for 4th to 6th grade struggling readers to review, reinforce, and reestablish phonics-based learning. Whether at school, at home, or on the go, Hope Reads meets students where they are and helps them build the foundational skills needed to become confident, independent readers.
How Does It Work?
We are accomplishing this by using a clear, systematic approach to phonics. Students review letter-sound relationships ranging from simple to more advanced concepts, quickly gaining skills needed to read decodable stories — gaining confidence and motivation to continue.
The app progresses through leveled phonics content: letters, blends, words, and sight words. Each level unlocks a mini-game and a decodable reader, reinforcing the sounds just learned in context before the student advances.
Quick Start
This application is called a progressive web app or PWA. This allows you to download the application to any device (mobile phone, tablet, Mac, Chromebook, and more). Additionally, we have designed it so you can download your game progress from one device and transfer it to another. This is helpful when you get that shiny new phone!
Desktop/Laptop
To download to desktop/Laptop, go to https://read.hopenlc.org. Find the install button on the right side of the search bar as shown below. Click install and the app will be installed on your computer.

Mobile Device
To download to a mobile device, go to https://read.hopenlc.org. Find the add to homescreen button in your mobile browser and the app will install on your phone!

Transfer Game Progress
To transfer game progress, click on the "H" symbol in the top left corner of the app. Then click on the "Save" button. A download game button will appear next to the save button. Click on the download game button to save a file to your computer. Email or AirDrop it to yourself, open on the new device, then click the "H" symbol and choose "Choose File" to load your progress.
Devices Supported
Hope Reads is available on all modern internet-connected devices through your browser. You can also install it as an app using your browser's install/Add to Home Screen option.

How to Play
The goal of the game is to learn to read. You will be presented with letter families. Review the letter, recite the words, and play the game! If you get it right, you will earn a gem and move on to the next letter. After defeating all the letters for the level you will unlock a mini-game. Beat the mini-game to unlock a reader. Read the reader to unlock the next level.
How to Win
You win by completing all levels. You will become an expert reader!
Progress Monitoring
Hope Reads includes built-in progress monitoring so parents, guardians, and educators can follow a student's reading journey. Here is what is tracked and how it works:
What is tracked
- Level completion and current level
- Gem and letter scores per level
- Phonics mastery indicators (letters, blends, words, sight words)
- Reader completion
- Mini-game performance
- Time spent reading
Who can see it
- Free accounts: progress is stored locally on the device only
- Paid individual accounts: the account holder can view progress in the parent dashboard
- Group/enterprise accounts: authorized org admins can view all students in their group
- Hope Reads staff do not access individual progress except in authorized support situations
Progress data is never sold or shared with third parties. For enterprise accounts, administrators can generate progress reports to share with educators or use for intervention planning.
Compliance & Safety
The safety and privacy of our learners — especially children — is foundational to how Hope Reads is built and operated.
COPPA (Children's Online Privacy Protection Act)
Hope Reads does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 without verifiable parental consent. Free accounts require no personal information at all — progress is stored entirely on the user's device. When creating a paid account for a child, a parent or guardian must complete the account registration and consent flow.
FERPA-Aligned Practices
For schools and educational organizations using Hope Reads under a group or enterprise license, our data practices are aligned with FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) principles. Student educational records and progress data belong to the student and their institution — not to Hope Reads. Data is used solely to provide the educational service and is not disclosed to unauthorized parties.
No Advertising or Data Monetization
Hope Reads does not display advertisements to students. We do not sell, rent, broker, or share student data with advertisers or data brokers. The app is funded by voluntary paid subscriptions and grants — not by monetizing user data.
Parental Consent & Controls
Parents creating paid accounts for their children will go through a consent acknowledgment flow before the account is activated. Parents may request deletion of their child's data at any time by contacting us at info@hopenlc.org.
Data Security
All data in transit is encrypted via HTTPS/TLS. Cloud-stored progress data is protected by row-level security policies — each user can only access their own records. Organizational administrators can only access records belonging to their organization. Service access is controlled by scoped API keys and authentication tokens.
Pricing & Plans
Hope Reads is free for everyone. Our mission is literacy access for all, so the core experience — all phonics levels, decodable readers, mini-games, and device-local progress — will always be free.
For families and organizations that want more, paid plans are available:
